It’s also important to highlight the significant local cooling effect of plants unrelated to oxygen production. Despite the small total percentage of oxygen produced by forests, plants are constantly releasing water into the atmosphere through photo-respiration. It’s estimated that more than 95% of water taken up by the roots of a plant is released into the atmosphere. Water is primarily used to just transport nutrients through the plant.
